In a recent meeting of the Northampton School Committee held on April 10, 2025, significant discussions centered around a student survey aimed at assessing the needs and experiences of students at Northampton High School (NHS). The survey, conducted by the Student Union, covered various topics including mental health resources, transportation issues, and food quality in school lunches.
One of the most pressing findings revealed that 25% of students are unaware of available mental health resources, highlighting a critical gap in support for students seeking help. Although 75% of respondents recognized some options for assistance, only 32% reported having met with an adjustment counselor. This discrepancy raises concerns about the accessibility and visibility of mental health services within the school.

This inconsistency has led to challenges for students relying on buses for daily transportation, with many depending on friends or family for rides when they miss their bus.
The survey also gauged student opinions on school lunches, which received an alarming average rating of just 36 out of 100. Students expressed dissatisfaction with portion sizes, indicating that current federal calorie limits may be contributing to the problem. This feedback underscores the need for further discussions on improving meal options and addressing nutritional needs.
In addition to these key topics, the committee discussed the importance of expanding mental health initiatives and the potential for including student voices in policy development. Plans are underway to involve students in the Wellness Committee, aiming to enhance mental health resources and explore alternative physical activity options.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to address the survey findings and improve student support systems, emphasizing the importance of listening to student voices in shaping school policies. As the committee moves forward, the insights gained from the survey will play a crucial role in guiding future initiatives and ensuring that the needs of all students are met.
