Minneapolis is gearing up for a transformative shift in its downtown transit landscape, with plans to relocate key bus routes off Nicollet Mall to enhance the area’s vibrancy and accessibility. During the March 20, 2025, Climate & Infrastructure Committee meeting, city officials outlined a collaborative effort involving the city, downtown stakeholders, and Metro Transit to activate Nicollet Mall as a central hub for community engagement.
The initiative aims to revitalize Nicollet Mall, which serves as the city’s busiest transit corridor, accommodating nearly 12,000 daily riders. The city has budgeted $400,000 for programming in 2026 to support events and activities that will draw people to the area, including popular gatherings like the Taste of Minnesota and Holodazzle.

Subscribe for Free Three potential options for relocating transit routes were presented, with routes 11 and 25 expected to move to Hennepin Avenue. This decision is based on routing considerations and aims to improve connections at the downtown's edges. The city has been working closely with Metro Transit since 2023, conducting two phases of public engagement to gather feedback on these options.
As part of the ongoing improvements, the city plans to enhance transit infrastructure with ADA upgrades, new bus shelters, real-time signage, and bike racks along the selected corridors. These upgrades are designed to ensure that transit remains efficient and accessible, even as buses are rerouted.
The committee emphasized that while the planning for Nicollet Mall's future is underway, the focus remains on ensuring high-quality transit service during the transition. The anticipated changes are expected to not only improve transit efficiency but also breathe new life into the downtown area, making it a more inviting space for all residents and visitors.
