Somerville Council supports resolution for Mass Central Rail Trail completion

A push to complete the Mass Central Rail Trail gained momentum at the Somerville City Council meeting on April 10, 2025, as community advocate Alan Moore urged council members to support a resolution aimed at extending the popular Somerville Community Path all the way to Northampton.

Moore, co-president of the Friends of the Community Path, highlighted the path's successful opening in the summer of 2023 after 23 years of advocacy. He emphasized the importance of connecting the existing trail, which currently spans 66 miles, to the remaining sections of the abandoned railroad that stretches 104 miles to Northampton. "We want to get this completed so you could walk, cycle, whatever all the way from North Station in Boston to Northampton," he stated, calling for local governments to pass resolutions that could help secure funding and state involvement.

Council members responded enthusiastically, with several expressing their admiration for the advocacy efforts that have transformed the community path into a vibrant resource for residents. Councilor Ian Kevin praised the Community Path Advocacy Group for their dedication, while Councilor Saeed noted the project's potential benefits for climate resiliency, traffic mitigation, and community health.

The resolution received unanimous support from the council, marking a significant step toward enhancing connectivity and promoting outdoor activities across the region. As the council moves forward, the hope is that this initiative will inspire other communities to join in the effort, creating a healthier and more connected Massachusetts.
