During the recent Olentangy Schools Board of Education meeting, the spotlight was on the district's thriving speech and debate teams, showcasing their impressive growth and achievements across all four high schools. The presentation, led by Liberty High School's speech and debate coach Rebecca Granada, highlighted the transformative impact of these programs on students, emphasizing their role in fostering public speaking skills, critical thinking, and community engagement.
Granada likened speech and debate to track and field, explaining that it encompasses various events, including Lincoln Douglas debate, public forum debate, and congressional debate, as well as multiple speech categories. Students engage in rigorous preparation, often competing multiple times in a single day, which not only hones their oratory skills but also builds resilience and teamwork.
