In a recent special meeting of the Grand Junction City Council, the results of the recent elections were discussed, highlighting key outcomes that will shape the local governance. Cody Kennedy emerged victorious in City Council District D with 9,626 votes, while Laurel Cole ran unopposed in the same district, receiving 12,096 votes. In District E, Robert Ballard secured the seat with 8,660 votes. The at-large seat saw Ben Van Dyke take the lead with 7,838 votes among three candidates.
The council also addressed two ballot questions. The first question, which proposed moving elections to November to align with Mesa County, passed with 10,106 votes in favor. However, the second question regarding a pay increase for council members did not pass, receiving 8,907 votes against.

Subscribe for Free City Clerk Austina Hurst noted that there are still outstanding ballots and signature discrepancies that need to be resolved before final certification. Currently, 171 signature discrepancies are being addressed, and 100 ballots remain uncounted to maintain voter anonymity. The final numbers from Mesa County are expected by April 18, with a special meeting scheduled for April 21 to finalize the vote canvassing.
Voter turnout for this election was lower than in previous years, with 16,604 votes counted so far, compared to a record 18,675 in 2023. Hurst expressed gratitude to Mesa County elections for their coordination and support, ensuring a smooth election process.
Council members acknowledged the successful execution of the election and discussed the importance of clear communication regarding candidate withdrawal deadlines. Hurst confirmed that a candidate guideline handbook is provided to all candidates, detailing important dates and procedures.
