The City of Tampa's Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is making strides in revitalizing East Tampa, with significant updates shared during a recent meeting. The agency is currently 60% through a community redevelopment plan, which was informed by listening sessions held earlier this year. A consultant will present further details at the East Tampa Citizens Advisory Committee meeting in May.
One of the focal points of the discussion was the Gator Building, located at the corner of Lake Avenue. The CRA is actively working to assemble surrounding properties to enhance the area and is drafting a Request for Proposals (RFP) for future development. Community feedback from a vision session held in March emphasized the need for more aggressive action regarding the Gator Building, which has remained vacant since its purchase six years ago. Stakeholders expressed a desire for visible progress and a clear timeline for development.

Recent acquisitions include properties on Palafox and the Destination Church site, which are part of a broader strategy to enhance the community's infrastructure and livability.
The agency also reported on its grant programs, noting that residents are eager for more opportunities. A workshop is scheduled for April to ensure that funding aligns with community needs, especially in light of pending legislation in Tallahassee that could impact CRAs.
Efforts to improve communication about available grants were highlighted, with board members acknowledging that many residents may not be aware of the resources at their disposal. The CRA aims to streamline the application process and enhance outreach to ensure equitable access to funding.
As East Tampa continues to evolve, the CRA is committed to transforming the area into a vibrant community where residents can live, work, and play. The agency's proactive approach and community engagement are crucial as they work towards realizing the potential of East Tampa.
