The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) held a webinar on April 8, 2025, to provide information about the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP) grants. These grants, which range from $20,000 to $100,000, are designed to support waste reduction projects and are typically completed within two years.
During the meeting, MassDEP officials highlighted the importance of innovative waste reduction proposals. Last year, the department awarded three grants for waste reduction initiatives, which are currently in progress. Examples of eligible projects include regional recycling partnerships, educational outreach, and large-scale school programs. Notable past projects mentioned included the Paxton Regional Recycling Center and an agricultural plastic film recycling pilot program in Franklin County.

One successful project from the previous year was an anaerobic digester for the town of Winchester, expected to be operational by the end of the calendar year. Another grant option focuses on establishing permanent household hazardous waste facilities, with funding available for both individual municipalities and regional projects.
The application process for these grants is competitive, and eligible applicants must be municipalities or regional entities, although partnerships with non-profit organizations are allowed. The online application requires a project proposal, which includes a narrative, work plan, and budget.
MassDEP emphasized the significance of these grants in promoting sustainable waste management practices across the state. Key dates for grant applications and further details can be found on the MassDEP website, encouraging interested parties to prepare their proposals promptly.
