Little Rock launches drone pilot program in Twelfth Street Division for crime monitoring

Drones are set to enhance emergency response capabilities in Little Rock, as city officials announced a pilot program utilizing drone technology in the Twelfth Street Division. During a special board meeting on March 25, 2025, discussions highlighted the integration of drones into the real-time crime center, allowing for improved situational awareness during critical incidents.

The drones, currently operated through a software called DroneSense, can be deployed across various city divisions, similar to the existing canine units. This flexibility aims to bolster public safety efforts, particularly in urban areas where rapid response is crucial.

In addition to drone operations, the meeting also addressed the acquisition of the old Florence Crittenden facility for $300,000, which is expected to serve as a shelter for unsheltered and low-to-moderate income individuals. The facility, which can house up to 70 people, will require some renovations but is considered a valuable investment, having appraised at $4.45 million.

City leaders expressed gratitude for the efforts of the Little Rock Fire Department and other first responders during recent wildfire incidents, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in managing emergencies. Plans for significant investments in fire safety and community resources are anticipated in the coming months, with a focus on enhancing the city’s emergency preparedness and response infrastructure.
