Cerritos outlines festivities for multiple milestone anniversaries in 2026

The Cerritos City Council is gearing up for a year of significant commemorations in 2026, marking both local and national milestones that resonate deeply with the community. Among the highlights are the 70th anniversary of Cerritos, the 250th anniversary of the United States, and remembrances of the Cerritos Air Disaster and the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

To celebrate its 70th anniversary, the city plans a series of engaging activities designed to honor its history and foster community spirit. Proposed events include the dedication of the "Milking Time" sculptures, a nod to Cerritos' origins as Dairy Valley, and a festive anniversary luncheon and dance at the Cerritos Senior Center. Enhancements to the annual Spring Fling and Fireworks Spectacular, a talent showcase featuring local residents, and a story core project at the Cerritos Library to capture residents' memories are also on the agenda. Additionally, the city aims to create a special anniversary logo and produce keepsakes, alongside contests for children and teens that celebrate the city's history.

The national celebration of Independence Day in 2026 will coincide with Cerritos' own festivities, as the city plans to host a "Let Freedom Ring" event to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States. To ensure a grand celebration, city staff has requested an increase in funding for this event.

The city will also observe the 40th anniversary of the Cerritos Air Disaster with a memorial gathering at the Sculpture Garden, inviting the community to remember the victims through prayers and shared memories. Similarly, the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks will be marked by a community gathering that includes patriotic performances and expressions of gratitude to first responders.

Looking ahead, the city is considering commissioning a musical piece from composer Rob Capillo to commemorate its 75th anniversary, with plans for a premiere at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.

Funding for these commemorative events is contingent upon City Council approval, with a proposed budget allocation of $30,000 for the 70th anniversary celebrations and additional requests for the other significant events. The council is expected to review these proposals in the upcoming budget discussions, ensuring that these important milestones are celebrated in a manner that reflects the community's values and history.
