Cerritos Council explores community workforce agreement and new light rail options

Cerritos City Council is taking significant steps to enhance local employment and transportation options, as discussed in their recent meeting on April 10, 2025. Council member Polito proposed two key initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth and improving community connectivity.

The first initiative is the introduction of a Community Workforce Agreement (CWA). Polito emphasized that this agreement would facilitate collaboration between the city, local contractors, labor unions, and residents, particularly targeting students from local schools who may not pursue higher education. The CWA aims to create meaningful job opportunities, promote equity, and support local businesses, including those owned by disabled veterans and social enterprises. By ensuring access to prevailing wage employment, the agreement seeks to combat poverty and unemployment while maximizing local economic development.

Polito's second proposal involves exploring the addition of a train stop in Cerritos at the intersection of 180 Third Street and Gridley. This stop would connect the city to the Southeast Gateway light rail, linking Southeast Los Angeles County with Downtown Los Angeles. The council member noted that discussions with Metro are already underway regarding this potential development.

Both initiatives will be placed on the agenda for upcoming May council meetings, prior to the adoption of the city’s 2025-2026 budget. These proposals reflect the council's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Cerritos residents through improved job opportunities and transportation access, setting the stage for a more connected and economically vibrant community.
