Oberlin City Council revamps recycling with new drop-off and collection strategies

Oberlin City Council has announced significant changes to its recycling programs, aiming to enhance community participation and streamline waste management. During the regular meeting on February 18, 2025, city officials revealed that residents will no longer need to pre-register for curbside yard waste collection. Starting this spring, city workers will canvas the community to collect bagged yard waste, charging a flat fee of one dollar per bag, simplifying the process for residents.

In addition to the yard waste changes, the council is revamping its brush collection schedule. Instead of the previous four to five-week collection periods, brush will now be picked up during the first week of each month from April through November. This adjustment is designed to reduce the time debris sits on curbs, addressing community concerns about unsightly piles.

The city is also moving forward with plans for a new glass recovery drop-off site at the southeast corner of Oberlin Road and Hill Creek Drive. This facility will not only accept glass but may also include drop-off options for cardboard and scrap metal. The city aims to start this service within a month, although specific hours of operation are still being finalized.
