Library Board unveils expansion plans for Jackson's main library amid rising visitor numbers

The City of Jackson, TN, is gearing up for a significant library expansion, as highlighted in the recent City Council meeting. Library Board Chair Philip Mullins presented compelling updates, revealing that the library currently sees an impressive 15,000 visits each month, with over 420,000 items circulated in the last year alone. This growth has prompted the need for a strategic expansion plan, which was initiated following a feasibility study conducted in 2019.

The proposed expansion aims to increase the main library's size from 30,000 to at least 65,186 square feet, while the North Branch would grow from 35,500 to 12,242 square feet. The city and county have already invested nearly half a million dollars into the project, which includes purchasing adjacent properties for future development. The estimated cost for the design development is approximately $789,596, with total construction costs projected at $32.2 million, to be shared between the city and county.

Mullins emphasized the library's role as a community hub, stating, "I just can't imagine downtown without the library." The expansion will include new meeting rooms, study spaces, and a dedicated area for children and teens, enhancing safety and accessibility. A drive-through service is also planned to improve convenience for families.

In addition to the library updates, the meeting featured discussions on a proposed transitional homeless shelter. Community members expressed strong support for the shelter, highlighting its potential to alleviate pressure on library seating, which is often occupied by unhoused individuals seeking refuge. The library has become a vital space for many, and the proposed shelter could provide necessary support services, including job training and referrals.
