Sudbury summer camp prepares for full sessions amid high demand and limited pool space

Sudbury's Park and Recreation Commission reported strong interest in summer programs during their March 10, 2025, meeting, with many sessions already sold out. The younger children's summer camp, catering to ages 5 and 6, has reached full capacity, prompting a waitlist of 12 eager participants. For older children, ages 7 to 12, there are 75 spots available per session, with approximately 10 children on the waitlist for each.

The commission is currently reaching out to returning staff, achieving a solid return rate that is close to 50%. This experienced workforce is crucial as the department prepares to hire additional staff to accommodate more children. However, logistical challenges remain, particularly concerning pool access and space management during inclement weather. The pool is a critical component of the summer program, with strict ratios for supervision: one adult for every five younger children and one for every ten older children.

To enhance the summer offerings, the commission has scheduled various camps, including STEM and art programs, to fill the gap between the end of the school year and the start of the main summer camp, which runs from July 7 to August 15. This strategic planning aims to provide continuous engagement for children throughout the summer months.

Concerns were raised about potential withdrawals from the program due to the Smile program, which has affected participation in previous years. While the commission noted a loss of about five children so far, they remain vigilant about the situation as summer approaches.

Overall, the meeting highlighted the proactive steps being taken to ensure a successful and engaging summer for Sudbury's youth, with a focus on maintaining safety and quality in the face of growing demand.
