William Carter urges Washougal Council to support light rail for economic growth

During the Washougal City Council Workshop on February 24, 2025, community member William Carter passionately advocated for the development of a light rail system linking Washougal to the broader Portland Metropolitan Area. Carter, who identified himself as part of the older demographic, emphasized the importance of embracing change to accommodate future growth and environmental sustainability.

Carter highlighted the economic interdependence of Washougal, Camas, and Vancouver with Portland, arguing that the region's prosperity relies on effective mass transit solutions. He warned that failing to support the light rail initiative could jeopardize funding for critical infrastructure projects, such as the I-5 Bridge, and lead to increased traffic congestion and pollution from automobiles.

He expressed concern over the current limitations of the existing bridges, stating they are already struggling to handle traffic volumes and will be unable to cope with future demands. Carter urged the council to adopt a forward-thinking approach, warning against isolationist mindsets that could hinder economic growth and mobility.

Carter concluded by calling for community engagement in the planning process, stressing that the opportunity to enhance regional connectivity should not be missed. He encouraged council members to prioritize the long-term economic vitality of Washougal and the surrounding areas, advocating for the light rail as a necessary step toward a sustainable future.
