Larimer County celebrates National Public Health Week highlighting health equity initiatives

The Larimer County Administrative Matters Meeting held on April 8, 2025, focused on the celebration of National Public Health Week and highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment. Public Health Director Tom Gonzalez opened the meeting by introducing key staff members and emphasizing the importance of public health as an "invisible shield" that has significantly increased life expectancy over the past 150 years.

Gonzalez noted that the theme for this year's National Public Health Week, running from April 7 to April 11, is "It starts here. Your health is our mission." He outlined the department's commitment to ensuring safe food and water, protecting against outbreaks, and addressing social determinants of health through community partnerships. He stressed the interconnectedness of community health and the necessity of a strong public health workforce.

Davonte Tobe, the Health Equity Initiatives Coordinator, spoke about the importance of health equity, which ensures that all individuals have access to the resources they need to achieve optimal health. He highlighted the department's efforts to eliminate barriers such as poverty and discrimination that affect community health.

Senior Population Epidemiologist Jared Olsen shared notable successes in public health, including a significant reduction in child mortality rates due to immunization programs and initiatives aimed at improving maternal and child health. He cited the Colorado Family Planning Initiative, which has dramatically decreased the teen birth rate in Larimer County, allowing young women greater opportunities for education and economic advancement.

Deputy Public Health Director Andrea Clement Johnson showcased activities planned for Public Health Week, including community walks and cleanup efforts, aimed at recognizing the contributions of public health staff. She acknowledged the collaborative efforts of various community partners in promoting health and wellness.

During the meeting, Gonzalez addressed challenges facing the department, including misinformation about public health science and funding constraints. He emphasized the need for advocacy to secure federal funding, which is crucial for supporting marginalized communities.

The meeting concluded with a call for a proclamation recognizing National Public Health Week, followed by an invitation for comments from the commissioners. The discussions underscored the vital role of public health initiatives in fostering a healthier Larimer County and the ongoing commitment to health equity and community engagement.
