Lehi City launches utility relocation project ahead of 2027 completion

In the heart of Orem City Hall, city officials gathered on March 11, 2025, to discuss critical infrastructure projects that promise to reshape the community. Among the most pressing topics was the ongoing construction of a resilient pipeline designed to withstand potential seismic activity, particularly in light of the area's geological vulnerabilities.

The meeting featured a detailed presentation on the engineering challenges posed by a normal fault located near 15 60 East. This fault, which dips at a steep angle, poses a risk of significant horizontal and vertical displacement during an earthquake. To mitigate these risks, city engineers are implementing a specialized pipeline known as HRDIP, developed in Japan, which is engineered to rotate and elongate under stress. This innovative approach aims to ensure the pipeline remains functional even in the event of ground movement.

As the project progresses, the city has prioritized public involvement, holding multiple meetings since 2021 to keep residents informed about potential disruptions. The construction, awarded to WW Clyde, is set to be completed by the summer of 2027. City officials emphasized their commitment to maintaining open lines of communication with the community, utilizing flyers, text alerts, and social media updates to keep residents apprised of developments.

However, the project is not without its challenges. Residents living near the construction site have expressed concerns about access to their homes, particularly during the more intensive phases of construction slated for 2026. City officials assured attendees that emergency access would be maintained and that they would work closely with affected homeowners to address any issues that arise.

In addition to the pipeline project, the council also discussed updates to the city's master plans for utilities, which are reviewed every four to five years. This ongoing effort reflects Orem's commitment to adapting to the needs of its growing population while ensuring the safety and reliability of essential services.
