Lemonster School Committee reviews ESSER funds and approves updated athletics policy

The Leominster School Committee convened on April 7, 2025, to discuss several key issues impacting the district, including the use of ESSER funds, a mid-year review of the superintendent, and updates on interscholastic athletics policies.

A significant portion of the meeting focused on the allocation of ESSER funding received for COVID-19 relief. Committee members emphasized their commitment to using these funds responsibly, primarily for capital projects rather than hiring staff, which could lead to budget shortfalls in the future. This approach has positioned the Leominster Public Schools favorably compared to other districts facing financial difficulties after mismanaging similar funds.

The committee also reviewed the superintendent's progress on established goals. The superintendent presented a report detailing advancements made since September, inviting questions and discussions from committee members. A follow-up meeting was proposed to further evaluate these goals.

In addition, the committee addressed updates to the interscholastic athletics policy. Changes were made to ensure that student athletes are not penalized for choosing not to participate in sports, aligning with existing Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) regulations. The first reading of these amendments was approved, with a second reading scheduled for a future meeting.
