City Council approves Larch House bar's conditional use permit for downtown location

A proposed bar at the Larch House hotel in Whitefish is set to enhance the downtown area, following a unanimous recommendation for approval from the Community Development Board. The Whitefish City Council discussed the conditional use permit during their March 17 meeting, highlighting the establishment's potential to contribute to the local economy and community atmosphere.

The Larch House, currently under construction at 304 East First Street, initially planned to operate as a restaurant with a beer and wine license. However, developers have opted to pursue a full beverage license, which requires a conditional use permit due to zoning regulations. The bar will feature seating in the main lobby, private dining, a speakeasy in the lower level, outdoor dining on a patio terrace, and a rooftop bar.

City officials confirmed that the project aligns with the downtown business district master plan and complies with all zoning standards. Notably, the developers will also create additional angled on-street parking, enhancing public access in the area. With no anticipated negative impacts on the neighborhood, the proposal is seen as a positive addition to Whitefish's vibrant downtown scene.

The council's next steps will involve further discussions and a formal vote on the conditional use permit, which is expected to move forward smoothly given the strong support from city staff and the community development board.
