City honors Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr. killed in line of duty during meeting

National Animal Services Officers Appreciation Week took center stage at the Upland City Council meeting on April 14, 2025, as Chief Blanco urged residents to recognize the hard work of animal control officers. In addition to honoring animal services, Chief Blanco also acknowledged National Telecommunication Communicators Appreciation Week, urging residents to express gratitude to dispatchers who are the backbone of police services. "They take those emergency calls and send the officers where they need to go," he said, underscoring their critical role in public safety.

The meeting took a somber turn as the council adjourned in memory of San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr., who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on March 17, 2025. Deputy Cuevas, who began his law enforcement career in 2018 and served with the Upland Police Department until 2021, was remembered for his infectious energy and deep commitment to serving others. He leaves behind a wife, two young children, and a grieving family. The council extended its deepest condolences, honoring his service and dedication to the community.
