Santa Maria officials tour new affordable housing developments for seniors and families

With a focus on sustainability, these units are equipped with energy-efficient systems, offering significant rent savings of approximately $800 per month for families earning 60% or below the area median income. The property also provides essential services, including educational programs for children and workforce readiness support for adults.

Another stop on the tour was the Sierra Madre Cottages, which cater to low-income seniors. This development includes 34 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom units, all conveniently located near shopping and public transport. Residents benefit from on-site support services at no cost, and the energy-efficient features help save around $690 per month in rent.

The tour also showcased the Sierra Sands property, which offers 184 pet-friendly units for families earning less than 60% of the area median income. With amenities like a clubhouse and playground, this community aims to foster a supportive environment for families. Similarly, the Centennial Gardens property provides 160 units for families earning 70% or less of the area median income, featuring spacious apartments and recreational facilities.

For seniors aged 55 and older, the Santa Maria Studios development offers 160 studio apartments with modern amenities and significant rent savings of about $910 per month. This community, completed in 2022, was built using modular design, allowing for rapid construction to meet urgent housing demands.

Lastly, the West Cox Cottages, maintained by the Housing Authority of Santa Barbara County, provide a supportive environment for individuals transitioning out of homelessness. This community of 31 one-bedroom bungalows emphasizes a peaceful atmosphere and offers various support services, with rent savings of approximately $950 per month.
