The Gaston County Board of Education convened on April 14, 2025, to celebrate notable achievements among its educators and discuss ongoing initiatives. The meeting highlighted the recognition of two outstanding teachers, Miss Baxter and Miss Lynch, for their contributions to education in the region.
The session began with a commendation for Miss Baxter, who received the North Carolina Student Academy of Science (NCSAS) Teacher Award. This prestigious accolade honors educators who excel in supporting students in STEM research. Miss Baxter is set to formally accept her award on April 25 at the NCSAS state meeting in Morganton. Her students have been actively involved in various STEM and STEAM activities, including the Envirothon competition, where three of her five teams advanced to the state level, with one team achieving first place in the soil and water district category—a first for a public high school. Additionally, she has initiated an outdoor club that engages former students from several local schools.
