The City of Oak Harbor is making significant strides in enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities at Freedom Park, with ongoing work on walking trails and a new disc golf course. During the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission meeting on April 14, 2025, officials provided an update on the progress made in clearing and developing the 75-acre forested property.
Brandon, a project leader, reported that teams have been actively thinning out overgrown vegetation to create clear pathways for both the walking trails and the disc golf course. The work involves using various tools, including chainsaws and brush trimmers, to remove invasive species and debris while preserving the mature trees that contribute to the park's natural beauty. Subscribe for Free Eric McCabe, the golf course designer, emphasized the importance of keeping healthy trees intact while removing less desirable undergrowth. He noted that the project is progressing well, with the team effectively navigating challenging terrain to create a more inviting space for visitors. The cleared areas will not only improve the aesthetics of the park but also reduce fire hazards associated with dense underbrush.
The commission highlighted the collaborative efforts of the team, including arborists who assess tree health on-site, ensuring that the development aligns with environmental best practices. The anticipated outcome is a revitalized park that offers residents and visitors a chance to explore and enjoy the natural landscape through well-maintained trails and recreational facilities.
