Sundial Energy aims for approval of Mound Hill solar projects amid public concerns

The Lee County Zoning Board of Appeals has taken a significant step towards the development of the Mound Hill Road North and South Solar Projects, following a detailed review of compliance with state and local regulations. During the meeting on April 14, 2025, testimony from Sundial Energy's co-CEO, Austin Schwier, confirmed that the projects meet all requirements outlined in the Statewide Citing Act and Lee County Ordinance.

Schwier highlighted that the solar farms will not only enhance local property tax revenues but also provide residents with the opportunity to subscribe to the projects for credits on their electricity bills. The initiative is expected to improve biodiversity through the planting of pollinator-friendly vegetation, which will also aid in drainage management.

The projects have been designed with community feedback in mind, featuring increased setbacks from nearby residences—over 874 feet for the north project and approximately 891 feet for the south project—well beyond the required 150 feet. This adjustment aims to mitigate any potential impact on the surrounding area, including noise and visual disturbances.

In addition to environmental benefits, the solar farms are projected to enhance the local electrical infrastructure, contributing to grid reliability amid rising energy demands. The projects will also adhere to strict safety standards, including fencing and signage to ensure public safety.

However, concerns were raised by local residents during the public comment portion of the meeting. One resident, Nick Hermas, expressed apprehension about the use of prime farmland for solar development, arguing that such land should be preserved for agricultural production. He also raised health concerns regarding potential carcinogenic materials in solar panels.

Despite these objections, the board is moving forward with the approval process, emphasizing the projects' alignment with Lee County's comprehensive plan for rural agriculture. The next steps will involve further discussions and potential negotiations with local landowners regarding landscaping and other community considerations.
