Farmington Public Schools evaluates iPad summer opt-in policy for students

Farmington Area Public Schools is considering changes to its iPad program for students as the summer break approaches. During the April 14th, 2025, School Board meeting, officials discussed the current opt-in policy that allows students to take their iPads home over the summer. Currently, the default is that iPads remain at school unless parents actively choose to have them sent home.

As of now, approximately 60% of students have opted to take their devices home, with higher participation rates observed among senior high students. The board emphasized the need for a decision soon, as the summer season is approaching. There was a discussion about the logistical challenges of managing device distribution and repairs, with last year's summer repairs being notably low, indicating that the program is not overly burdensome on resources.
