Boston Public Schools (BPS) is set to enhance post-secondary outcomes for students, particularly those with learning disabilities, following a recent government meeting focused on the FY26 budget. The discussions highlighted the importance of creating pathways for students to access higher education and vocational training, with a specific emphasis on the STRIVE program at Wentworth, which provides critical support for graduates.
Councilor Fitzgerald underscored the need for better communication about available programs, ensuring that parents are informed about opportunities for their children. The meeting revealed that BPS has implemented a zero-sum budget process aimed at reallocating resources efficiently, allowing for the retention of essential staff and services in schools. This strategic approach has resulted in an overall budget reduction of approximately $8.5 million, with funds redirected to support frontline educational services.

Prior to COVID-19, about 61% of BPS graduates enrolled in college or vocational programs, a figure that has since dropped to around 54%. The district aims to reverse this trend by expanding alternative education options and ensuring that all students, including those in special education, have access to career training and early college programs.
BPS is also working on developing a comprehensive tracking system to monitor post-secondary outcomes, including college enrollment and job readiness programs. This initiative aims to provide transparency and accountability, allowing stakeholders to understand the effectiveness of educational strategies.
Looking ahead, BPS plans to roll out a new inclusion model in September, which will gradually integrate students into grade-level curricula in a more tailored manner. This change is expected to enhance educational access for all students, fostering a more inclusive learning environment.
As BPS continues to refine its approach to education, the focus remains on equipping students with the skills and opportunities necessary for successful transitions into college and careers, ensuring that every student has a pathway to success.
