Church of Jesus Christ plans Salt Lake Temple reopening and community invitation for tours

In a vibrant meeting at Salt Lake County's city hall, the County Council welcomed Juan Bracera, the government community relations manager for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to discuss the highly anticipated Salt Lake Temple Square renovation project. As Bracera took the microphone, he painted a picture of a transformative period ahead for the iconic temple, which has been closed for renovations since December 2019.

Bracera emphasized the temple's significance as a sacred space for worship and community, describing it as a "house of the Lord" and a place where members learn about love, service, and the teachings of Jesus Christ. The renovation aims not only to enhance the temple's beauty but also to address seismic safety concerns and improve accessibility. Notably, the temple will now offer services in multiple languages, expanding its reach to a diverse audience.

The project is set to culminate in an open house from April to October 2027, inviting the public to explore the temple after its extensive renovations. Bracera anticipates an influx of visitors, estimating between three to five million people will tour the temple during this six-month period, likening it to the bustling atmosphere of the church's general conference but stretched over half a year.

As construction progresses, Bracera shared details about the seismic upgrades designed to ensure the temple's longevity. The renovation includes a reinforced foundation and advanced engineering systems that will allow the building to withstand significant seismic activity. This engineering feat is expected to preserve the temple for generations to come.

In addition to the temple itself, the surrounding Temple Square will see improvements, including new visitor centers and enhanced landscaping, with over 200 new trees planted to beautify the area. The removal of the surrounding wall aims to create a more inviting atmosphere, encouraging visitors of all backgrounds to enjoy the space.

Bracera concluded by inviting the community to engage with the ongoing activities at Temple Square, including tours, cultural exhibits, and family history resources. As the renovation continues, the Salt Lake Temple is poised to emerge not only as a place of worship but also as a vibrant community hub, welcoming all to experience its rich history and spiritual significance.
