City plans to trial claw trucks for efficient solid waste collection by 2026

During the January 27, 2025, Regular Commission Meeting, city officials discussed the potential addition of a new type of waste collection truck to Yankton's fleet. This innovative vehicle, equipped with a "claw" mechanism, is designed to efficiently lift and empty roll carts from the curb, enhancing safety and operational efficiency for waste collection crews.

Commissioner Villanueva highlighted the safety concerns associated with traditional waste collection methods, particularly the risks faced by workers riding on the back of trucks. He noted that the current practice exposes employees to distracted drivers and harsh weather conditions, making it difficult to recruit workers willing to perform outdoor tasks in extreme temperatures. The new truck aims to mitigate these risks by allowing operators to remain safely inside the vehicle while collecting waste.

The city has been exploring this option for some time and has consulted with other communities that have successfully implemented similar trucks. The discussions indicated that Yankton might adopt a hybrid approach, utilizing both traditional and new collection methods, especially in areas with narrow alleys where the new truck may face challenges.
