The Jacksonville Waterways Commission has taken a significant step towards enhancing public access to the Ortega River with a proposed kayak launch project. During their meeting on April 10, 2025, a commission member presented an idea for a kayak launch at two potential locations, aiming to improve safety and accessibility for outdoor enthusiasts.
The first proposed site is on Collins Avenue, where it crosses the Ortega River. However, this location presents challenges due to its forested floodplain and limited parking options, as it is owned by the North Florida Land Trust. The second, more unconventional option is at the intersection of Argyle Forest Boulevard and Blanding, where the member noted that many kayakers and fishermen already access the river informally.

Discussions have already begun with the property owner, Lamar Advertising, who is open to negotiating a deal with the city.
However, the project faces a hurdle: the city must own the property to utilize funds for the kayak launch. The commission member expressed concerns about tracking down the current owners of the shopping center, which is listed under a complex LLC structure. Despite these challenges, the potential for a safe and accessible kayak launch remains a priority for the commission, promising to enhance recreational opportunities for the community.
As the commission continues to explore this initiative, the focus will be on overcoming property ownership issues and securing the necessary agreements to move forward. If successful, this project could transform public access to the Ortega River, promoting outdoor activities and community engagement.
