Rockdale County celebrates youth basketball teams at GRPA state tournament recognition

The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners meeting on March 25, 2025, highlighted significant community achievements, particularly in youth sports and employee recognition. The meeting began with expressions of gratitude towards county employees for their dedication to public service, emphasizing their role in ensuring community safety and well-being.

A major focus of the meeting was the recognition of the Rockdale County Parks and Recreation Department's successful hosting of the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) state basketball tournament. Interim Director Sahara Wilson reported that the tournament, which took place in March, attracted nearly 3,000 visitors from ten counties and showcased local talent across three gyms. The Rockdale Junior Box Teams, competing in the 14U and 17U divisions, participated with commendable spirit, despite not placing in the tournament.

The meeting also celebrated the achievements of the 10U basketball team, which won the GRPA District 6 Class A tournament in Walton County. This marked their first appearance at the state level, a milestone that was met with enthusiasm from the community. Coach Carlos Gibson, who has volunteered for 16 years, expressed pride in the team's hard work and determination, noting their close finish in the state championship game.

The meeting concluded with a call for continued support for youth sports and community initiatives, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and dedication in fostering local talent. The Board looks forward to future events and continued engagement with the community.
