Downtown Planning Commission grants extension for Walnut Square Apartments project

The Allentown Planning Commission made significant strides in urban development during its April 8, 2025 meeting, notably approving a 12-month extension for the Walnut Square Apartments project. This extension allows developers to finalize plans while awaiting state approval for tax credits, a crucial step for the project's progression.

Jonathan Strauss from Cortex Residential presented the update, highlighting that the project is "shovel ready" and has made adjustments to the building's color palette, shifting from a stark white to a warmer off-white to enhance the aesthetic appeal. The commission had previously requested these changes, emphasizing the importance of community feedback in the development process.

In addition to the Walnut Square Apartments, the commission reviewed a sketch plan for a new East Side apartment complex at 750 East Turner Street. This ambitious project proposes seven apartment buildings on 16.85 acres, featuring a mix of two-and-a-half and three-story structures. The developers voluntarily submitted this sketch plan to gather informal feedback before moving to a formal preliminary plan, demonstrating a commitment to community engagement.

Key modifications to the East Side project include the removal of security gates, which had raised concerns about accessibility, and the addition of sidewalks to improve connectivity. The developers are also exploring ways to enhance walkability and create green spaces, addressing previous feedback from the commission.

The meeting underscored the commission's proactive approach to urban planning, balancing developer needs with community interests. As these projects move forward, the commission looks forward to further refinements and resubmissions that align with Allentown's vision for sustainable and accessible urban living.
