RISC advocates for dedicated funds for affordable housing and mobile home repairs

A call for action on affordable housing took center stage at the Richmond City Council meeting on April 14, 2025, as community leaders urged council members to allocate funds to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. Ralph Hodge, vice president of the RISC organization, emphasized the critical need for a dedicated funding stream, highlighting that the law mandates $8.2 million to be included in the budget. "This fund can help provide housing that meets the needs of those making 30% of the average median income or less," Hodge stated, underscoring the urgency of supporting the most vulnerable families facing eviction.

The discussion also touched on the pressing issue of mobile home repairs, with Hodge advocating for an additional $1 million to address deteriorating living conditions. He noted that many residents suffer from extreme temperatures and health hazards due to inadequate housing. "We approached the previous administration during COVID to appropriate funds for repairs, and we are asking for your support tonight," he urged.

Janice Lacey, another RISC member, reminded the council of an ordinance passed four years ago that directs funds from real estate tax exemptions to support the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. "Thank you in advance for following the law," she said, reinforcing the community's expectation for compliance.
