In a heartfelt ceremony during the Parma City Council meeting on February 19, 2025, local heroes from the Parma Police and Fire Departments were honored for their life-saving actions. Chief Blair took the stage to commend four officers—Patrolman Yeoman, Detective Kollina, Officer Gilligan, and Officer Manzo—who displayed extraordinary bravery and quick thinking in critical situations.
Patrolman Yeoman was recognized for his swift response to a distress call on Russell Avenue, where he performed CPR on an unresponsive man, ultimately saving his life. "Thanks to his swift actions, the patient regained consciousness and survived," Chief Blair stated, presenting Yeoman with a certificate and medal.
Detective Kollina and Officer Gilligan were also honored for their roles in a December motor vehicle crash involving an 83-year-old man in cardiac arrest. Their immediate intervention, alongside Officer Manzo, ensured the man received critical care in just minutes, leading to his survival.
The ceremony also included emotional acknowledgments from community members, including a mother who shared her harrowing experience when her infant daughter stopped breathing. She expressed profound gratitude to the firefighters and paramedics who arrived promptly and provided life-saving assistance.
In addition to honoring first responders, the council recognized State Road Meats for its 50 years of service in the community, highlighting its significance as a local landmark.
The meeting also addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, marking the third anniversary of Russia's invasion. Mayor DeGeer read a proclamation in support of the Ukrainian community, emphasizing Parma's commitment to standing with Ukraine and acknowledging the sacrifices made by many.
As the meeting concluded, the council underscored the importance of community support and the vital role of local safety forces, reinforcing the message that their dedication saves lives every day.
