Nicole celebrates Portola District's library initiatives and community engagement

In a vibrant celebration of community and empowerment, the San Francisco government meeting on April 16, 2025, highlighted the remarkable contributions of local librarian Nicole, who has become a beacon of hope and inspiration in the Portola District. Nicole's dedication to fostering a love for reading among children was underscored by her implementation of a restorative justice policy aimed at creating an inclusive environment for all young library visitors. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, as a bilingual third grader expressed, "I love this library so much. I never want to leave," reflecting the positive impact she has made.

Nicole's passion extends beyond books; she is a founding member of the Portola Urban Greening Steering Committee, which promotes sustainability and community identity. Her initiatives include the establishment of a native drought-tolerant garden in 2014 and the introduction of a seed library, which not only educates children about horticulture but also emphasizes nutrition and food security. "I see libraries as... a light to help guide people through whatever they need help with," Nicole stated, emphasizing her commitment to serving the community for nearly 30 years.

The meeting also honored Andrea Du Steele for her pivotal role in elevating women's voices in politics, particularly through her founding of Emerge California, which trains women to run for office. Supervisor Stephanie praised Andrea's relentless advocacy, noting that since its inception, Emerge has trained over 4,000 women, with more than 1,000 winning elections. Andrea's influence is evident in the increasing representation of women in government, including notable figures like Senator Kamala Harris.
