City staff recommends Hudson Springs Park for new inclusive playground location

The Hudson City Council meeting on April 8, 2025, spotlighted the future of an inclusive playground, as city officials discussed alternative locations following the loss of an $800,000 federal appropriation. The original plan for the playground at Middleton Road has been scrapped, prompting the Parks Board to explore new sites, with Hudson Springs Park and Barlow Farm Park emerging as viable options.

City staff confirmed that the inclusive playground design fits well at both locations, though Hudson Springs Park is the preferred choice. The existing playground at Barlow Farm, over 25 years old, poses challenges for relocation due to discontinued parts, making it likely that it will need to be dismantled. The estimated cost to move equipment from Barlow Farm could range from $50,000 to $100,000.

The proposed project at Barlow Farm includes enhancements such as sunshades for playground equipment and the conversion of a concession area into a family restroom. The total estimated cost for the inclusive park project is around $1.2 million, excluding equipment. Funding sources include $680,000 from the state, $400,000 from the city’s budget, and over $200,000 from the Hudson Community Foundation.

Additionally, plans to expand the parking lot at Barlow Farm Park, which was previously budgeted, could add approximately 35 spaces, improving accessibility for visitors. The council's discussions reflect a commitment to enhancing community recreational facilities, ensuring that all residents have access to inclusive play spaces.
