Camden County addresses groundwater issues at Howard Peoples pickleball courts

Camden County is taking steps to address groundwater issues affecting the popular Howard Peoples pickleball courts, following concerns raised by local players during the Board of Commissioners meeting on April 15, 2025. Diane DeBose, a pickleball ambassador, highlighted the rapid growth of the sport in the area, which began with just ten players in 2014 and has now expanded to hundreds, making the courts a vital community resource.

DeBose reported that recent heavy rains have caused water to seep through the court surfaces, leading to bubbling and blistering of the quartz coating. This damage is attributed to moisture trapped beneath the surface, which can compromise the integrity of the courts. The community is advocating for the installation of French drains to mitigate these issues and protect the investment in the facilities.

The Board acknowledged the concerns and noted that the approval for French drains was on the agenda for discussion. This proactive approach aims to ensure the longevity of the courts and maintain their status as a hub for recreational activity in Camden County.

In addition to addressing the pickleball courts, the meeting also included the swearing-in of a new animal control officer, further emphasizing the county's commitment to community services.
