The Waunakee School District Board of Education held a meeting on April 15, 2025, where key discussions focused on traffic safety improvements at Heritage Intermediate School and proposed technology upgrades for the district's transportation fleet.
The board reviewed a proposal regarding the Heritage parking lot, which was ultimately not recommended. Civil engineer Roxanne Johnson had previously evaluated traffic flow at the school following an accident involving a student and a vehicle. The evaluation indicated that adding an additional entry and exit point would not alleviate traffic concerns but could worsen them. Instead, the committee proposed a curbing project in the northwest corner of the property to enhance safety by preventing left turns in a problematic area where the accident occurred.
While the idea of adding 96 parking spots was discussed, the committee concluded that existing parking facilities were sufficient for daily use and special events, such as concerts. The board unanimously approved the curbing project to address safety issues without incurring the high costs associated with expanding the parking lot.
In addition to traffic safety, the budget committee presented recommendations for technology upgrades to the district's transportation fleet. Superintendent Dr. Brown highlighted the need for improved technology, which had been successfully implemented in her previous district. The committee considered two options: one where the district would purchase the technology outright, and another where the transportation provider, Lamers, would own the technology with a slight fee added to the bus routes.
The committee recommended introducing a GPS tracking app for parents to monitor bus routes, which would be funded by the district. Additionally, they proposed that Lamers invest in security camera upgrades, with costs incorporated into the daily bus route fees. The board discussed reallocating funds from a canceled program to support these transportation technology enhancements.
Overall, the meeting underscored the district's commitment to improving student safety and enhancing transportation services, with plans for further discussions on efficiency in the transportation sector.
