Aggregate Industries applies for new special exception to expand Maryland mining operation

In a recent zoning hearing, Prince George's County officials discussed a significant proposal to amend an existing special exception for a surface mining operation in the Gaslight area. The application, known as special exception 22,007, seeks to replace and expand the current mining operation, which has been in place for over two decades.

The proposal involves relocating and replacing approximately 328 acres of the existing mining site, with 230 acres designated for active mining. This expansion aims to enhance the efficiency of operations while ensuring that nearly 100 acres will be preserved for environmental purposes, including floodplain and tree conservation areas. The applicant, now operating under the name WholesaleMar Inc., emphasized that the new plan will not increase the overall impact on the surrounding community compared to the existing operations.

A key aspect of the proposal is the transportation of mined materials. Instead of using trucks to move raw materials off-site, a conveyor system will be employed to transport materials directly to an existing processing facility on the property. This change is expected to reduce traffic and minimize environmental disruption.
