Aurora's Navigation Campus set to open in late 2024 with $40M funding

The Housing, Neighborhood Services & Redevelopment Policy Committee of Aurora City convened on April 16, 2025, to discuss significant updates regarding the regional navigation campus aimed at addressing homelessness in the Denver Metro area. Evan Knight, the manager of the homelessness program, provided a comprehensive overview of the project, which has garnered over $40 million in funding from various sources, including a $15 million state grant awarded in 2024.

The navigation campus, located in the former Crown Plaza Hotel, is undergoing renovations to transform the space into a multi-functional facility. The design includes an emergency overnight shelter, job training services, a day center, and workforce housing. Knight emphasized the urgency of the project, noting that renovations began in early 2025, with plans to open the facility by the end of the year.

Key features of the campus include a low-barrier emergency shelter that allows individuals to stay overnight and engage with case management services. The facility aims to provide a supportive environment for those experiencing homelessness, with the potential for individuals to transition into more stable housing situations.

During the meeting, committee members raised questions about the operational aspects of the campus, including the possibility of allowing individuals to stay in their vehicles temporarily and the need for community outreach to ensure local residents are informed about the services being offered. Knight confirmed that while the facility will not serve as a long-term safe parking site, there may be flexibility for individuals transitioning from living in their cars.

The committee also discussed the importance of maintaining open communication with neighboring communities to address any concerns and foster a collaborative relationship as the campus prepares to open. Knight assured members that community engagement efforts are underway, including outreach events and partnerships with local agencies.
