Mercedes High School power lifting team achieves historic state championship victories

The Mercedes Independent School District (MISD) held its regular board meeting on April 15, 2025, where various achievements in athletics and community initiatives were highlighted. The meeting began with a celebration of student accomplishments in powerlifting and other sports, showcasing the dedication and talent of the athletes.

The board recognized several female athletes who qualified for regional competitions. Notable mentions included Noeli Rodriguez, who was crowned the regional champion, and Amber Herrera, who also achieved a championship title. Other regional qualifiers included Brianna Ramirez, Chloe Belcher, Veil Trevino, Justine Pena, Lexi Pogue, and Cardi Bridal, with several athletes earning placements that qualified them for state competitions.

The boys' powerlifting team was also acknowledged for their historic season, which included winning the first state championship in the program's history. Key athletes such as Matthew Perez and Isaiah Caso were celebrated for their impressive performances, with Perez finishing third in the state in his weight class and Caso setting a regional record.

In addition to athletic achievements, the board recognized the efforts of the Mercedes High School Criminal Justice Club. The club successfully organized an autism acceptance fundraiser at the Mercedes Civic Center, demonstrating the students' commitment to community service and awareness.

The meeting concluded with a sense of pride in the accomplishments of the students and the positive impact they are making both in sports and within the community. The board expressed its support for continued initiatives that promote student engagement and excellence.
