Transportation department selects Safe Charters for $126K charter bus service

The San Angelo ISD School Board has taken a significant step to enhance its transportation services by approving a new charter bus contract aimed at improving efficiency and reducing costs for out-of-town travel. During the meeting on April 14, 2025, the board discussed the increasing demand for charter bus services and the strategic decision to bid out travel for seven high-volume dates.

The administration presented bid 25-003, revealing that after sending out a Request for Proposal (RFP) to charter bus companies, they received nine bids, with eight meeting the necessary criteria. Safe Charters of Thai, Texas, emerged as the top choice, offering the lowest price of $126,694.42 for chartering 42 buses on the selected travel dates.

Board member Miss Turner highlighted the importance of this planning effort, noting that securing these quotes in advance saves the district significant funds compared to short-term bidding, which could escalate costs dramatically. The board confirmed that this is the second year of implementing this proactive approach to charter services.

Questions arose regarding the lack of local charter companies, with the administration confirming that all bidders were from out of town. The board also clarified that the buses provided would be modern travel charters, not traditional yellow school buses.

This decision is expected to streamline transportation logistics for the district, ensuring that students can travel efficiently to events while keeping costs manageable. The board's commitment to planning ahead reflects a strategic approach to resource management in the face of growing travel needs.
