The Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners recently recognized the United Way Emerald Coast for its significant contributions to the community during their regular meeting on April 15, 2025. The board proclaimed April 21 through April 25 as United Way Emerald Coast Volunteer Week, highlighting the organization’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of life for residents in Okaloosa and Walton Counties.
The United Way Emerald Coast, established in 1954, has become a vital resource for volunteerism and community support. With a mission to unite people with resources, the organization has developed innovative strategies to foster collaboration and engagement among local nonprofits. Last year alone, 3,465 volunteers contributed over 13,800 hours of service, resulting in a community impact valued at approximately $441,000.

The organization’s programs, such as the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Reading Pals, aim to connect individuals with meaningful service opportunities and support children’s literacy development.
The upcoming 31st Annual Day of Caring on April 24, 2025, will see various groups come together to complete 45 volunteer projects across local nonprofits, schools, and municipalities. This event underscores the power of collaboration in tackling community challenges.
In her remarks, a representative from United Way Emerald Coast noted that nearly 40% of the community struggles to make ends meet, highlighting the importance of partnerships in addressing these issues. She encouraged residents to participate in the Day of Caring and to utilize available resources, such as the 211 hotline for connecting with nonprofit services.
The board's unanimous support for the proclamation reflects a shared commitment to enhancing community welfare and recognizing the vital role that volunteerism plays in Okaloosa County. As the county moves forward, the partnership with United Way Emerald Coast will continue to be a cornerstone in addressing local needs and fostering a spirit of community engagement.
