West Lafayette Redevelopment Commission plans new public safety center with modern amenities

The Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission convened on April 16, 2025, to discuss a significant redevelopment project in West Lafayette, Indiana, aimed at modernizing the old City Hall and Fire Department site. The meeting highlighted the planned development (PD) that seeks to revamp the public safety center, which will house both police and fire departments under one roof.

The project, located just south of Sagamore Parkway and off Navajo Street, is the result of extensive public input and planning. Amanda, a staff member, presented the proposal, emphasizing the need for modern amenities and increased space for both departments. The current police station, which has been in use since the 1960s, is outdated and lacks adequate facilities for both male and female personnel.

Larry Oates, president of the West Lafayette Redevelopment Commission, provided further details about the project. He clarified that the existing site currently hosts a police station, not a fire station, and outlined plans for a new facility that will include a parking garage with 105 spaces, public meeting rooms, and shared spaces for both departments. The design also incorporates a training tower for firefighters, addressing a critical need for training facilities in the city.

The redevelopment aims to maintain the same response times for the fire department while improving operational efficiency and public access. The project will also integrate a small piece of property for a public park, enhancing community resources in the area.

The commission recommended approval of the planned development, marking a significant step forward in the revitalization of public safety infrastructure in West Lafayette. The next steps will involve finalizing the project details and moving forward with construction plans.
