Community groups collaborate for Earth Day and sustainability initiatives

Los Alamos County's Environmental Sustainability Board is gearing up for a busy spring, with Earth Day celebrations and a focus on community engagement at the forefront of discussions. During the meeting on April 17, 2025, board members highlighted plans for Earth Day activities and the upcoming DPU Water Festival, scheduled for May 20-21. These events aim to promote energy conservation education and engage local students in sustainability efforts.

A notable point of discussion was the impressive 94% increase in yard trimming services reported in March. This surge is attributed to the Environmental Services staff's proactive measures to prepare residential yards for wildfire prevention, emphasizing the county's commitment to environmental resilience.

Additionally, the board explored potential collaborations to enhance food support for local families. Ideas included partnering with local restaurants to collect surplus food for those in need, particularly students at UNMLA. Ko Kyung, a board member, shared her successful initiative of collecting leftover food from local businesses, which is then distributed to shelters, showcasing community efforts to reduce food waste and support vulnerable populations.

As the board looks ahead, they are eager to finalize plans for Earth Day and the Water Festival, while also continuing discussions on food composting and regional landfill feasibility studies.
