Rebecca Teura announces music festival and adaptive programs at Bartlett Park

The City of Laredo is gearing up for a vibrant community music festival aimed at fostering local engagement and support for special needs initiatives. Scheduled for April 26 at Bartlett Park, the festival will feature a mix of high school bands, mariachi drum lines, local musicians, and a DJ from Austin, promising six hours of free entertainment for residents.

Jenny Sanchez, a special needs manager with the Parks and Recreation Department, announced the event during a recent meeting of the Blue Ribbon Committee. She emphasized the festival's collaborative nature, highlighting partnerships with the United Independent School District (UISD) and local sponsors. The event not only aims to entertain but also to raise awareness and support for UISD's sensory rooms, which provide essential resources for students with disabilities.

In addition to the festival, Sanchez shared plans for adaptive classes and summer camps designed for individuals with special needs. The Parks and Recreation Department is actively seeking instructors and coaches to lead these programs, which will be funded in part by upcoming budget allocations. The department is committed to expanding its offerings, with plans for four adaptive mini camps throughout the summer.

Another significant development is the establishment of an adaptive gym at Haines, set to open by June. This facility will cater specifically to individuals with disabilities, providing them with a dedicated space to engage in physical activities. Sanchez expressed optimism about these initiatives, stating that they represent a long-awaited shift towards inclusivity in the community.

As the city moves forward with these projects, residents can look forward to more opportunities for engagement and support, particularly for families of individuals with disabilities. The upcoming music festival and the new adaptive gym are just the beginning of a broader effort to create a more inclusive environment in Laredo.
