City Council approves Flexi Pave for park renovation over crushed limestone

Waukesha's Board of Public Works has approved the use of Flexi Pave for a key park area, a decision expected to enhance both accessibility and environmental sustainability. During the meeting on April 17, 2025, board members discussed the numerous benefits of Flexi Pave over traditional crushed limestone, particularly its low maintenance requirements and durability.

Flexi Pave, made from recycled rubber stone and a binding agent, is designed to be environmentally friendly and highly porous, allowing it to handle up to four inches of water per hour. This feature is particularly important for the park area, which has a history of flooding. Board members noted that the material is slip-resistant, crack-resistant, and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), making it a suitable choice for a space frequently used for weddings and events.

The lifespan of Flexi Pave is estimated at a minimum of 15 years, significantly reducing the need for annual maintenance that would be required with crushed limestone. Board members emphasized that this would not only save time and resources but also improve accessibility for all visitors, including those using wheelchairs.

Concerns were raised about the potential impact of standing water on the material, but it was noted that Flexi Pave's porous nature would facilitate drainage and cleanup, making it a practical solution for the area. The board unanimously supported the motion to proceed with the installation of Flexi Pave, marking a significant step towards enhancing the park's infrastructure and user experience.
