Lafayette Library reports significant circulation and programming growth during National Library Week

The Lafayette City Council meeting on April 18, 2025, highlighted significant updates from the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, emphasizing the library's growing role in the community as it prepares to celebrate National Library Week.

Rob Tiggett, the Senior Community Library Manager, reported a 4% increase in overall circulation across Contra Costa County libraries, with a notable 18% surge in eBook circulation. This trend reflects a shift towards digital resources, particularly in a post-COVID environment where many patrons prefer electronic materials. Tiggett also noted a 6% rise in library visits, indicating a positive recovery from pandemic-related declines.

At the Lafayette Library specifically, annual visits have reached approximately 204,000, a substantial increase from previous years. The library has engaged over 10,000 patrons through more than 400 programs, including outreach to local schools. The summer reading program saw over 720 participants, marking a 7.5% increase from the previous year, with adult participation rising by an impressive 45%.

The library's commitment to community service was further illustrated by the success of the Rolling Reader, an outreach van that distributed over 7,000 books and served more than 13,000 individuals, focusing on children and vulnerable communities. Tiggett also highlighted new digital resources, including Mango Languages and enhanced access to Consumer Reports, which broaden the library's offerings to the public.

Carol Varney, Executive Director of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation, provided insights into the library's funding structure. She noted that the total operational cost for the library is around $3 million, supported by various sources including the city, county, and community fundraising efforts. Varney emphasized the foundation's role in sustaining library programs and services, which include diverse cultural events and educational initiatives.

The meeting underscored the library's vital contribution to the Lafayette community, not only as a resource for reading and learning but also as a hub for cultural engagement and support for local families. As the library continues to adapt to changing needs and preferences, its focus on both physical and digital resources positions it as a cornerstone of community life in Lafayette.
