Montgomery County is taking significant steps to enhance electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and improve public safety through the construction of a new cell tower. During the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners meeting on April 17, 2025, officials introduced an innovative online tool aimed at supporting the transition to EVs across local communities. This tool, available on the Montgomery County Planning Commission website, provides educational resources and an interactive mapping application to help municipalities plan for EV charging stations.
John Lesher, the Environmental Planning Assistant Manager, highlighted the growing interest in EV ownership, noting that the number of registered EVs in Pennsylvania has tripled since 2021. The new online tool is designed to assist local decision-makers in identifying optimal locations for EV infrastructure, addressing the needs of residents who may lack home charging options.

This decision comes in response to inadequate cell coverage in the area, which has raised public safety concerns. The tower will be built on existing maintained land, ensuring minimal environmental impact, and will generate revenue for the township, with 40% of gross earnings from leasing the tower to cell providers directed towards local conservation efforts.
The approval process for the cell tower involved extensive discussions among stakeholders, including township officials, community members, and conservation organizations. The resolution includes conditions to ensure that the tower's installation aligns with conservation goals, such as requiring the removal of the tower if it becomes obsolete and collaborating on future conservation projects.
These initiatives reflect Montgomery County's commitment to sustainability and public safety, providing essential resources for residents while promoting responsible development. The online EV tool is now live, and the cell tower project is set to address critical communication needs in the community.
