Raymore Peculiar School District hosts AI and Innovation Summit for educators

The Ritenour School District Board of Education meeting held on December 12, 2024, focused on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, reflecting a growing trend in Missouri schools. The meeting began with a presentation from the Missouri School Boards Association (MSBA), highlighting the increasing role of AI in classrooms and its potential to personalize learning experiences for students.

During the session, educators discussed the importance of embracing AI as a tool for enhancing education. Ruth Johnson, board president of the Raymore Peculiar School District, emphasized that school boards must address AI's presence in education, stating, "AI is here... how can we best utilize it as a tool with our teachers to help educate the students at all levels?"

Emily Craig, an English teacher, shared insights on involving students in the integration of AI tools, noting that this approach fosters real-world learning and essential skills for future careers. She remarked on the importance of teaching students to question and critique AI tools, which she believes will be invaluable in their professional lives.

Assistant Principal Steven Meek from Raymore Peculiar High School described AI as a positive disruptor in education, advocating for a shift away from traditional rote memorization towards more engaging, project-based learning. He expressed hope that AI could help redefine educational practices to better prepare students for the 21st century.

The meeting also featured a panel discussion with students who shared their experiences using AI in their studies. They highlighted the necessity of preparing for a future where AI will be integral to various fields. One student pointed out that outright banning AI in schools could hinder their readiness for real-world applications.

To support educators in navigating the complexities of AI, MSBA announced the availability of an AI toolkit for K-12 education, which includes resources on policies, security, ethics, and equity. Additionally, a webinar titled "AI in Education: What School Leaders Need to Know" is scheduled for January 13, 2025, aimed at providing a balanced perspective on AI's implications in education.

The meeting concluded with a reminder of upcoming MSBA events, including advocacy day on March 11 and the annual conference in October. The board expressed gratitude for the dedication shown throughout 2024 and looked forward to continued discussions on AI and its role in shaping the future of education.
