Narragansett Council debates $800K renovation for aging pickleball courts

During the recent Narragansett Town Council budget worksession on April 17, 2025, a significant focus was placed on the renovation of the town's pickleball courts, which are in dire need of repair. The existing courts, originally constructed over 50 years ago by the Army Corps of Engineers, have deteriorated due to age and environmental factors, leading to cracks and frost heaves.

Council members discussed the estimated cost of the renovation project, which is projected to be around $800,000. This figure includes expenses for demolition, fencing, court painting, and concrete pouring. The project aims to maintain the current footprint of the courts while adding two additional courts without encroaching on nearby facilities. The council emphasized that the final cost will be determined through a bidding process, allowing for competitive pricing from qualified contractors.

In addition to the renovation plans, the council addressed the current usage policy for pickleball on tennis courts. Currently, the courts operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with dedicated pickleball courts available at various locations, including George C. and Clark Road. The council noted that while some tennis courts are lined for pickleball, others are not, and portable nets are provided for flexibility.

As the council moves forward with the pickleball court renovations, community members can expect improved facilities that cater to the growing interest in the sport. The discussions highlighted the town's commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities for residents while ensuring fiscal responsibility in managing public funds.
