Neenah park committee initiates Carpenter Preserve restoration with community volunteers

The Neenah City Council meeting on April 2, 2025, highlighted significant community efforts to restore the Carpenter Preserve, a vital green space in the city. Director Kading and the park and recreation committee received praise for their ongoing work to combat invasive species, particularly buckthorn, and for enhancing the preserve's natural beauty through tree planting and trail improvements.

The Carpenter Preserve, established in 1996, has seen substantial changes over the years, transitioning from a farm field to a developed area surrounded by residential neighborhoods. As invasive plants and dead ash trees have taken over, the park and recreation department has stepped up to restore the area. Their plan includes clearing invasive species, replanting native trees, and creating a sustainable pathway system that will withstand seasonal flooding.

Volunteers have played a significant role, with around 30 individuals participating last year to plant over a thousand trees.
